Re replaygain, EAC has supported track gain via command line option for a long, long time. The last time I used it did not support album gain, so if the user wants that it requires another pass (with foobar2000, or apply_replaygain.pl, or winamp, or something).
I'd agree that the biggest benefits of dBpa are when is starting from scratch, with a big (or huge) batch of CDs to rip. That's where the time saved in getting tagging right at rip time is the greatest.
