Question: How to you use Genres with your music files?

- Don't use genres, can do without
- Just a handfull as general guidance / entrance (-6)
- Some genres to make some distinction (7-15)
- Really fine grained (15+)
- I went all-in and copied Amazon's / HMV's / ... system (200+)
- Please, stop with these stupid polls!

I use a custom field called STYLE to represent my subgenre, and
dBpoweramp uses the field and fills it when ripping CD's (typically).
It isn't easy to set up Squeezebox Server to actually see the field.
You need Erland's plugins (Custom Scan and Custom Browse), which take a
little effort, but it is a one time effort. I have a custom menu that
will browse by genre then "subgenre" (i.e. STYLE) before getting to
albums or artists.

I believe dbPoweramp fills the style field in MP3's, but I haven't
checked. I know MP3tag can write any custom tag to MP3's, but they
likely are not going to be supported by other software. I can't
imagine ITunes or IPods supporting this field or allowing a custom
definition of the field.

In general you'll find that FLAC files are much more flexible when it
comes to custom fields. You can pretty much put any custom field you
want into a FLAC file and LMS can access it using the plugins
mentioned. MP3 files, however, aren't the most stable when you start
loading them up with custom fields.
