I share your opinion about Itunes : it's musical library has a very
simple and effective interface. It's perfect to play music on a laptop
or a desktop. 
In my case, there is no gaps in operas played on Itunes when they are
ripped with CDEX/Lame.
The problem is to use Itunes on on an external stereo system. In my
experience, to connect a PC to a stereo amplifier generates too much
background noises for classical music listening. That's the reason why
I bought a SB3. I do not regret this decision!
