The main reason we use an ASI card is for simple, multi-platform Livewire
I/O support. We're an Axia house, so most of our systems are Livewire
based. We actually get fairly decent value for our Livewire card since we
can use a single 8x8 stereo card to serve multiple Rivendell studios
by assigning a subset of the numerous outputs to each studio via
Rivendell's remote audio engine support.

For inexpensive Analog sound cards, we've looked at using the ESI
Juil@cards. They come in both PCI (
http://www.esi-audio.com/products/julia/) and PCIe (
http://www.esi-audio.com/products/juliaxte/) variants and offer 4x4
balanced or unbalanced analog IO as well as 2x2 digital IO for under $200.
We bought a few, but haven't had a chance to really test them out yet. They
advertise Linux compatibility, but our first go on Ubuntu 12.04 didn't seem
to want to show us all the I/O channels using the in-kernel drivers.
We haven't dived much deeper to try to remedy the issue or experiment with
other drivers, etc yet. Maybe others have played with them?

Cheers,
Andy
