Haven't seen a good (or even a bad) discussion on this topic recently, so:
Several changes in the Linux distrubution have occurred in the past few months.
What's the consensus on preferred flavor of distro currently...And why?
Server or Desktop?
Being spoiled by academic pricing, at UNR we get RHEL3 WS for $25/yr and RHEL3 AS for $50/yr, which is even cheaper than the old $60/yr for redhat.
I think I saw an article recently that showed debian to be the fastest growing distro which is probably all the ex-redhat user migrations due to their pricing lunacy. I think debian would be my choice for server if I didn't get academic pricing. For desktop, I'd probably look at gentoo
