I have managed to configure my router and firewalls to allow me to ssh
into my
office PC from outside the office. I get a nice terminal window that
allows me
to do most of the command line things you'd expect. Unfortunately I
also need to
be able to run X Windows to access certain things that require a GUI.
So far I have not been able to figure out how to do that on a M$ box.
I can run PUTTY and get in just fine but I have not been able to figure
out how
to run X. And yes I did enable X11 Forwarding inside of PUTTY. But I
seem to still
be missing something.
When I try running startx I get message of "User not authorized" which
doesn't make sense.
even xterm gives me message of Can't open display.
I've tried resetting the DISPLAY variable but then the cursor just sits
blinking at me.
Cygwin may be able to do what you require, but it will be _slow_. Not
just slow due to Cygwin, X is bulky and doesn't forward over the Internet
well. I suggest that you investigate a Virtual Network Computing (VNC)
solution. There are several open source, cross platform solutions on the
market. Some can be run with reasonable performance over a dialup
connection. Let me know if you need more info. I'd be happy to research
the topic more.
