I've had good success with cygwin/X.  This is a *NIX-like shell running on
top of Windows.  All *NIX OS calls are translated through the cygwin.dll.

You can get a complete X-window login by modifying some Windows batch
files to authenticate against a Linux box running an X server.  About 3
years ago, some X programs would not run properly, but now it is much more
stable and mature.

It requires a minimum ~350MB installation, because you have to install all
the support libraries and tools as well.
