The mud I imm on recently banned (with code of course) use of
common swear words across public channels exception [EMAIL PROTECTED] and its
derivations, this exceptions comes with the exception of the use of the
word 'god' in front. Then its religiously offensive and banned. The
code is backed by a nasty shocker to players. For attempting to cuss
instead of their message they wanted to say, over the same public
channel it instead says, as their character, "I tried to swear over a
public channel and all I got was -250xp!" They do actually lose the xp
too. Needless to say we don’t see many of those messages anymore. This
is actually partially to encourage role-play. We'd rather the players,
on at least the gossip channel, swear as their character would, i.e.:
"By The Beard of Durin!" or something like that.
We don't censor, at least not when I last checked, hell and homo
or fag. I find fag offensive myself, and the first time it comes out of
someone's mouth their standing goes way down to the immature 12yr old
level. We usually deal with these by way of "soft censor" - meaning
that we as immortals warn them not to do it if it's done in an insulting
manner towards another player. Essentially, if we decided it's harmful
to the environment, they get warned at least once.
On the whole this system has worked surprisingly well for us.

Sorry guys,
I know many of you don't like non-coding discussions, but I turn to
you all for an opinion on this because I truly do respect them, and
don't know who else to ask...
Point blank: Would you allow the use of the word 'homo' on your game?
The place in question is pretty rough and tumble, stuff like 'h3ll',
'sh!t' and 'b!tch' are common, the F word and the C word aren't. There's
no age disclaimer on entry.
