Well, keep lookin', if you happen to be messing around in that area. I'm not yet persuaded that it's impossible. (I'm also not yet completely persuaded of the necessity to run the sequencer as root just because jackd is run as root -- not that I actively dispute it, just that I haven't seen any concrete information about how permissions work in relation to communication through shared memory. I have seen Paul Davis say that this is so, but I don't recall him giving references either.) Ah... actually, of course the text in that Bugzilla report that I filed is out of date now, isn't it? It was written under the assumption that DCOP was used for all the communication between the GUI and the sequencer, and that's no longer the case. Can we do the new-style comms with the two processes running as different users? A definitive answer to that would presumably be one to the jackd question as well.
