The differences between 1.6 and 1.8 are relatively trivial, and the thing to
do there is probably to continue to support only the lower version, and
depend upon users running convert-ly to update the files so that they will
work with 1.8.

With 2.0 OTOH, it's going to be completely buggered. I don't have 2.0 yet
myself, but I do know that convert-ly won't do the update, and there are
substantial changes, necessitating some real attention. Hopefully nothing on
the order of an algorithm rewrite, but it's non-trivial enough that this is a
point of no return. We either export for multiple targets (which is IMHO a
slippery slope), or we pick *one* target and stick with it, which cuts
someone out somewhere.

My Lilypond advisor suggests that the correct course is to update for 2.0 and
force users to upgrade to 2.0, FWIW. In his opinion, that's what the
Lilypond community would expect.

What I worry about are people who want to use this, but who aren't really part
of the Lilypond community. I'm a prime example of such. I don't care if I'm
running an old version of Lilypond. I don't want to be forced to upgrade.
The thing to do for *me* would be to leave it the hell alone, but if we do
that, it will only be a matter of time before someone whines about not being
able to use RG-exported files on the version of Lilypond that came bundled
with Mandrake 9.2 or whatever the flavor of the month is.
