I found it.  I don't have an NVIDIA chipset, I forgot to mention.  Looks like 
this bug was limited to a narrow band of hardware, and mine isn't in that 
band.  Plus spread spectrum was already off.

No orange juice this time.

Mine's not dual core, but with my old 2 GHz P4 sitting there mostly idle now 
in my wife's hands, I will have to sync the installs on both boxes, and get 
distcc back up.  That ought to help considerably.
