The problem, incidentally, is with post-udev kernels that are built to require
an initrd. Some mysterious thing changed, requiring /dev/hda and friends to
be mknodded differently inside the initrd. Solution (only tested for Debian,
obviously, but I mention it because you also run Debian) is to boot with a
rescue CD, mount up the install, and then reinstall the kernel package(s).
The install scripts will build a new initrd inside the correct hardware
environment, and the resulting kernel will boot next time.

I also ran into a really dumb problem with this. I tried booting my old
Fervent kernel, and it got stuck on some bit about needing to
check /dev/hdb8. Apparently fsck has changed behavior so it doesn't show you
a progress thingie. I had no idea it was just fscking a 290 GB partition,
and actually doing something.

Damn. I just realized I could have booted that kernel and saved the money on
the stupid CD drive.

Hindsight sucks.

Oh well. Now I have a DVD-RW that I have no conceivable use for, other than
booting rescue CDs. I guess I could watch movies on my computer now, but why
would I want to do that? Maybe if I had a laptop, that might be interesting,
but I don't, and don't have the money to spend on one, and would never be
able to use it without a real keyboard anyway.

OK, I'll STFU now. I'm outright babbling now.
