I think the whole idea is predicated on the understanding that synths just fire off a command to play a sample until it's finished when they receive a note on for a percussion channel. Some in fact do exactly that. My Sound Canvas, I'm pretty sure if you trigger the "tinkle bells" sound, it doesn't matter if you do so with a whole note or a 256th note, it will sound exactly the same. Also, I think it was all patterned a bit after Hydrogen, where you just mark a dot and the drum plays for however long the sample is, with no duration control. I'd be interested in playing with a soundfont or something where the duration of percussion notes really makes a big difference, and I'd be interested in studying just how common this is. Anyway, the way I'm thinking on all of that comes down to maybe we should just give both matrix views a new set of options allowing them to transform into each other, and starting a "percussion matrix" just comes up with one set of options active by default. A new toggle for "show percussion keys / show keyboard keys" and "show real duration / show little diamonds where notes start" in both views could turn one into the other, but it would probably still be convenient to have two "open in n matrix editor" options; also for legacy reasons, to avoid confusion. Just quick thoughts on the fly though. -- D.
