He had a lot of obscure problems with that thing, and it turned out he wasn't using MIDI cables. He just had five stripped wires poked into the appropriate holes at either end. I guess the moral of the story is that really smart people are weird. I'm smarter than a lot of people in my life, and they're always telling me how weird I am.
