When I started the rsyslog project, a big motivation was to prevent a monopoly, which syslog-ng semed to become at that time. Even though the syslog-ng folks were (and still are ;)) very far from evil. I like freedom of choice. Fast-foward 10 years... If now utilizing github to its full potential means that *everything* must be done on github and you'll lose momentum if not everyone works with the github system ... we clearly have a monopoly again (or at least one that's trying to be built). This at the very heart is against the philosophy that created rsyslog. If there were really no chance to nurturing rsyslog than giving in to that monopoly, I would probably opt to give up rather than join the "lemmings". IMHO this is also the real spirt behind open source software, or better said "free software". I know this is pretty philosophical, nit-picking and probably an extreme PoV. But it is *me* and what keeps me motivated. Haveing spent 10 years of my life on this project, I take the liberty to feel rsyslog as a part of "me" (not excluding others -- for details see http://blog.gerhards.net/2008/08/work-and-personality.html ) Believe me, there had been ample opportunities to earn a large fortune if I had not sticked to certain principles. Again, I am not trying to bash at you (Otis) or anyone who thinks alike. I just want to explain why I have a different PoV here -- and I think at this point it is perfectly OK to agree that we disagree. I still highly value your contributions, and I can think that we'll move a bit closer to part of the github momentum (just think what we already did to the doc project!). But at the end of the day, there is a fine line that must be drawn. That's my firm believe, and I am willing to sacrifice quite a bit for it. It's good to be able to convey guiding principles in such conversations. I love the ML and its contributors.
