Why not use the same approach as when running Linux from a CD?
(Like installers usually do.) Use a RAM disk for root file system.

Well, if that means you don't need to store data on the hard drive,
the RAM disk root system is all you need.

I'll need to solve this for our instruments, as users are not expected
to
wait for a system shutdown before turning off power. And we don't want
to
fix crashed disks after power failures, someone pulling the wrong plug
and
such things... I'll use a RAM disk based setup and have a separate
filesystem on the HD that is mounted as read-write only when a changed
configuration needs to be saved, and then unmounted again.
