There exist several methods.

Mount everything read-only, keep /tmp on ramdisk, to change configuration
enter read-write mode.

LRP-type solution - uncompress everything to ramdisk, after you are satisfied
with config change, backup /etc - see http://www.linuxrouter.org/

Add -p to e2fsck options.
