The problem is not unique to robots.  I'm designing linux into a
telescope controller.  The 'scope and the building around it will
be operated by remote control.  The question is about what happens
when you have _either_ a power or a communication failure.  I'm
thinking now that we need a small UPS.  All we need is enough
UPS time to get the system into a "safe mode" then shut down.
Safe mode in our case is shutting down the instruments, their
coolers and water pumps and closing the roof.  An industrial
robot would also need to be "safed" whenever power fails on the
circuit powering the computer.  You would not like to leave
an arc welder or paint sprayer powered up.  These I assume would
be powered off a separate breaker from the computer.  So a 
small 200W UPS would be required.
