Yes, my $TERM is set to screen-256color for a good reason because I use tmux and tmux recognizes screen/screen-256color as well. With this setting all terminals work as expected (for me) except xterm (which I don't use) and rxvt. Setting the variable to `rxvt' would help for urxvt but would leave me the problem that then some keys do not work within other terminal-emulators. Sureley I am as dumb as a brick but even a dumb guy has to make his way in this world and one part of this way could be to change the settings in emacs as a workaround (not a solution) and leave the (working) rest alone. So I still sometimes can switch to another terminal when I've won at the races or at any other opporturnity.
