and he notes -

Here is a link to a GM&O car delivered in 1968. It includes a drawing of
the car:

Red Caboose offers such a car in 'N' Gauge and has a photo as well as a
brief history on this page:

While not S Gauge it is an interesting highlight of the prototype. I have
some photos taken in Cumberland, MD back in the 80s of the covers sitting
on a pile of ties and if I recall Lionel had similar covers which Sam
Powell adapted to S. Ed Schumacher also made the covers, (from the photos),
but used them on an AF gondola.

Lionel's coil car is shown here:

Or you can navigate their site if you can figure out how.

The covers can be found for $3.00 each on this site:
http://www.justrains.com/lioaccess.htm

Articles on building these cars can be found in October and December 1996
issues of Mainline Modeler.

Apparently there were several variations of Evans Coil Cars going back to
1964 with model #EP-200 demonstrator, (subsequent production models varied
by year). The prototype was extensively rebuilt as shown in the photo on
this site: http://www.rr-fallenflags.org/misc-e/ep200.jpg

And there are after sale manufacturers of covers too. (Trinity Rail
Components is one). As well as cars with no covers at all!

Most steel coil shipments went by covered gondola until the Evans cars
appeared. Big users were the appliance manufacturers as well as auto makers
so a small town manufacturer could get an occasional shipment. In my home
town, the White Mountain Freezer Co., (close to where I lived), unloaded
coiled steel shipped in boxcars on the team track and trucked it to the
plant. Although they had a siding it might have been a weight problem.

Hope this helps,

Raleigh
