ALL It is alleged that Tony Koester lost his editor's job at RMC because Irv Athearn called Hal C. and complained. It seams that in a review of the "new" GP-9 the writer observed that the manufacturer could have made the hood the proper width, given the new motors that were being used by Athearn, rather than leaving it grossly oversized. Irv said "editor goes, or advertising goes, your choice."
It is an unfortunate situation that manufacturers often do not seek out sources that can make their initial offering a prototypically correct model, and then demand that the press praise their efforts at mediocrity. As a practical mater, most manufacturers want a "generic" model that can have many paint schemes applied. None of the models will be correct for a given road; they will all be incorrect. Ah...consistency. My personal experience is that you can learn something from nearly every article in a magazine [if you choose to do so]. The scenery techniques in Model railroader for an HO layout apply to S. The articles on DCC in MR, RMC, and N Scale apply to S. Articles on kit bashing techniques for HO freight cars apply to S. This "blinders on" view is not unique to S scale. I see it in O scale [hirail vs scale], N scale, Ga 1 [1:32 /10mm], 16mm, and most especially Maine Two Foot. God will strike me if I read something that talks about industrial narrow gauge or "wide gauge". I know people who are such RGS fanatics they won't buy a book with D&RGW material in it. I guess we had better not read Al Armitage's articles on styrene construction; after all, he only worked in HO and O. As a last line to my rant, I will agree that MR and other Kalmbach publications are being saturated with ads for stuff. Too bad they don't do what Continental Modeler and Railway Modeler [uk pubs] do. ALL the adds are in the pages at the front and back, not interspersed with the main articles. You can open the staples, pull out the middle articles, remove the ads, and put the cover back with the articles. When you buy a bound copy at the end of the year, the ads are omitted. Jim Stapleton ============ >Thanks, Dave Engle, for your historical perspective. > >I note MR almost never says anything truly negative about its advertisers' products any more. Of course, when MR stopped being critical in Trade Topics, its advertising base zoomed. Gee, I wonder if there's a connection. [What? Me cynical?] > >regards ... pqr To REPLY to the list, use REPLY ALL; to reply to the sender, use REPLY.
