I have been doing same thing here in San Antonio.  I
usually rip the plywood 5-1/2", however.  I crosscut a
sheet on the tablesaw and then rip the pieces I need. 
This saves a lot of marking and crosscutting later on.
  I don't think plywood is stronger than lumber but it
does have the advantage of being (usually) straighter
and way more stable than lumber.
