I see no reason why plywood would not work for both
methods. You could use solid wood for risers and
such, but you will likely have some leftover pieces of
plywood, why not use them? Also, since the grain
alternates in layers of plywood, screws hold well in
any direction; in solid wood screws tend not to hold
well in end grain. Another tip: if you can find
auger point cabinet assembly screws, use them rather
than drywall screws. They don't split the material as
much, and they have a partially smooth shank so the
screw will slip and pull the material tight.
