I have been looking into what to do for S Scale switching layout re:
turnouts. Fastracks seems to be the way to go, however, expense is a
factor.

I've laid pre-fabricated "Old Pullman" turnouts to ties on current "O"
layout, and have read Paul Mallery's Trackwork Handbook.

Still I wouldn't want to tackle building all my turnouts completely
from scratch.

For small layout with varied turnouts intend to lay Tomalco turnouts.
For larger (retirement) layout intend to invest in Fastrack jigs.
