To everyone,
Thank you for all the terrific advice and insights! I now think I
understand the dilemma of tying to operate a mix of vintage high-rail
with new scale - there just isn't a universal turnout that will
accommodate both reliably.
To my eye, the height of vintage rail is not nearly as offensive as
the height, width and spacing of it's ties. So I could easily live
with spiking down code 148 rail to scales ties.
Similarly, the size of high-rail trucks is not quite as offensive to
my eye as the claw-like couplers are. I may be crusin' for a
bruisin', but has anyone tried mating high-rail S-gauge trucks to old
O gauge freight bodies and replacing the truck claws with chassi-
mounted Kadees? Seems to me that if one were to model a contemporary
line, the over-sized freight cars could fit in and make the high-rail
trucks seem a little more normal. Is this a good idea or a train
wreck?
Thanks,
Tim Brown
