Hi Tim;
You've lost me on this one. I gather your plan is to
recycle old AF trucks onto O toy bodies? Nearly all
hi-rail trucks today are the same as scale trucks,
just the wheels are different. What you propose would
make an odd combination, either semi-narrow gauge O
scale or oversize cars running on an S scale layout.
What scale buildings, people, details do you propose
to use?
It is worth noting that some older O-27 trains were
proportioned closer to 1/64 scale than 1/48 and such
cars have often been converted to S scale use, most
notably the Lionel double door boxcar ("Baby Ruth")
and the Industrial Designs ATSF caboose. K-Line
brought out their whole line of former Marx O cars on
S trucks but I don' think too many people on this list
had any use for them.
There is nothing really "wrong" per se with using the
current production high rail equipment on SHS or Tom
Stoltz code 125 track, but using Kadee 802 couplers or
even Kadee O scale couplers in place of the Flyer
compatible "claws" if that is what you prefer. Such a
layout would not be unusual, and would require a lot
less work (and probably look nicer) than your
suggested O cars/S trucks combination. As long as your
track base is good the smaller couplers should not be
a problem.
On an earlier topic, there would not be anything at
all wrong with a freelance "White Pass" as a standard
gauge line. Copy the scenery you like from the White
Pass, use the CDS "White Pass" lettering on whatever
equipment you decide your std-gauged version bought in
place of the real narrow gauge engines and cars and
have fun!
