Couldn't agree more with John. My point about the variety of cars in S was that there are ZERO, NADA, ZIP, as in NONE available in S scale, RTR.
And while there may not be EXACTLY to the scale inch what someone wants in a refer, stock car, hopper, etc., there are in point of fact at least SOME of them available. In recent months we have even seen a wonderful scale low side gon kit in S. There is no other car besides an open auto carrier that showcases an additional American icon of the 1950's: 1950's autos. My gang of kids in Kansas City Kansas in the 1950's waited with almost as much anticipation of the auto show as we did the Gilbert and Lionel catalogs. And back then, we knew EVERY model of EVERY auto produced in America. So in an auto carrier we get more bank for our buck. We get S rolling stock carrying vintage autos. The best of both worlds. Died and gone to heaven. Having said that, there is no single piece of rolling stock that will appeal to all. I even talked to a guy once who said he wasn't particularly fond of cabooses. He just put one on the end because it was prototypical for his era. And having said that, I find it difficult to understand why anyone would object to the production of a never-before done car in S. Seems to me that it would help just that much more to popularize S. IMVHO, some of us in S scale may be just a wee bit too particular and naval contemplative, only in the sense that it makes it difficult for manufacturers. If the 3,000 or so of those of us who are active S people each want a different car, specific to a particular road name, built on a certain day in a certain year and modified for a particular railroad, whew! That means SHS, AM, etc., has a market of a given car of maybe ten people. No wonder we don't see enough new stuff. An auto carrier may be the last car that YOU WANT, but you don't speak for me... and I strongly disagree, along with ALL of the other 8 folks who have spoken up so far on the topic. MDT Dispatch Shops built some of them. This auto rack is the last type of car that we need.
