And although I have no documentation to prove it, I am certain the Santa Fe was using a similar setup when I fired for that railroad in the early 1960's, between semesters.
Loaded, open auto carriers by the hundreds were pulled out of the Fairfax BOP (Buick, Oldsmobile, Pontiac) plant and shipped east and west. I saw them going west as my usual run was from the Argentine yards to Emporia. There was also the Leeds plant in Kansas City, Missouri and the Claycomo Ford plant north of the river, and they were all served by at least three railroads that used open auto carriers, and some of them were very similar to the original shorty version that John is describing. I think that in the early days of moving autos by rail, the various lines cobbled together whatever was available until Evans sort of standardized the whole process. I knew I shoulda shot more pictures of train stuff back then.... According to Don (as SHS), the NYC car was not a GSC flat car (NYC was not listed in his list of GSC buyers) However, the SHS-GSC flat is a dead-ringer for whatever flat the Evans rack was built on.
