Ok Michael,
I'll try to prove you wrong. First off, I think AM offered a set of
cars to replicate the California Zephyr. There was no opportunity
for anyone to agree or disagree. There may have been some discussion
before the offer came from AM, but the offer from AM was buy CZ cars
or don't buy them. Of course most S scale guys live in the east, and
didn't want a CZ train. I signed on for one, even though I had need
for only one car. I'm actually glad for AM's sake that the plan fell
through. I think he would have lost his shirt.
Secondly, Keith Thompson, Bill Lane, and I are all Pennsy guys, so
I'd bet we could agree on a couple cars S really "needs"! Probably
not the wrongs you wanted to be proved, but there you go. ;~)
Now it might be possible to offer some sort of flat kit for a car
generic enough that it would sell. Of course you still have three
types of roofs (Budd, Pullman, and ACF). I think the length in the
streamline era would be close enough to pass, and passenger cars all
had a standard profile, so ends should work out. Add in
interchangeable windows and you're there. The real problem is that
there really isn't much in the way of "Standardized" passenger cars.
There were so many little nuances the the task is much harder than it
may first appear.
