Hi Don....
Here are some ideas for nice GENERIC signals for S scale. First, SHS
has a semaphore which might be suitable for some folks. Next, the
TOMAR line of HO signals is very nice indeed. They have a wide
variety of stuff including semaphores, double-head semaphores,
targets of various kinds, order boards, and so forth. While the
masts are a bit short for S scale, the targets and semaphore arms are
too large for HO. Calling up the TOMAR owner and talking with
courtesy will result in his offering to build any of his HO signals
with a mast that is 36% taller. Thus, you can easily obtain the
correct height with targets and arms that are nearly dead nutz on for
S scale. Thirdly, there are a few fellas that make S scale signals,
but I have not seen them personally and so cannot comment. Fourthly,
for the NYC guys, a company called Model Memories makes beautiful
etched brass signal kits of the signature 'curved' catilever signal
bridge used along the Hudson River (Hudson Division) in S scale
(wonder who financed that product?). Model Memories also makes a
more generic platform type signal with either one or two masts. Both
types of signals are truly beautiful. Plasticville makes an O-27
conventional signal bridge that is easily converted to S scale simply
by cutting down the 'legs' and replacing the masts/targets with those
made by NJI and adding additional bracing with Plastruct and/or
Evergreen styrene pieces. The upper top surface might also need to
be replaced with a second lower surface depending on your degree of
pickiness. NJI makes heads (targets) that are oversize for HO and
just about correct for S. These include the NYC triangular pattern
as well as the PRR (yuk!) position pattern. NJI also makes/sells the
same S semaphore that SHS markets. There may be other signals
available that I do not know about. There are actually quite a few
signals of various types to choose from if you are willing to do a
little kit bashing and or make other modifications. Have fun...Ed L.
