Just to set the record straight, the first NASG brass project (Which
Don Thompson, Mike Ferraro and I headed up during Rollie's tenure.) was
specifically to promote NASG's track standards. The standards were
adopted in 1981 but most members still felt they were incompatible with
existing layouts.

The model, produced in 1983, allowed us to provide the membership
something tangible for their dues and promote the "new" standards. Non-
NASG members paid extra, more than the cost of a membership, and the
wheels were built to the new (now current) standards. When members
found out the cars did not derail every three inches, it allowed the
organization to make gauges and really bake in the standards. Most
people, maybe even Ed(?), never really even knew it.

Don or Mike may have a different recollection, but I do not remember
ever thinking this was about encouraging the two brass importers
serving S at the time (ALCO Models and Overland Models) to make freight
cars. At any rate, I do believe it was a valid use of a product
promotion to further the goals of the organization and scale, not all
of them are.

And besides, I still love my ACF covered hoppers..., them square hatch
covers add the right touch in today's world of round ones! <GRIN>
Check book modeling, when it makes sense... you bet!!!
