At Des Plaines Valley we pull 40 and 50 car trains with no thought or
concern for car weight. The trains are generally a mix of plastic,
brass, wood, you name it. Quite honestly the heaviest cars on the
road are not brass, they are Down's tank cars. You know, the ones
that feel like the ends are made of Uranium! IMHO it's more about
the rolling ability of the trucks than car weight. I've worked on
the trucks of my brass freight car fleet and most now roll about the
same as other cars, but there are always a few that pull like stumps,
keeps me busy on those snowy, below zero Wisconsin nights - like
tonight.
DCC, love it, would never go back, though I can understand the
headache of re-wriring an existing DC layout. The hardest part of
decoder installation is dismantling the locomotive, especially
articulated brass. Then again, if a u-joint pops or a motor dies in
the DC world, you would have to dismantle it anyway. Train too
heavy??..., In the DCC world just grab another locomotive and tack it
on to the front or rear and consist them all on one throttle. I
think some 12" to the foot gauge railroads do it that way. <G> We
run double headed steam or mid train or rear helpers, even some true
twin throttle double heading. Yeah, I know you can probably do all
this on DC, but I never experienced it until being initiated to DCC.
Again, IMHO, DCC is the largest 'raising of the bar' in the model
railroad hobby in the last 10 years - and one of the best things that
could have happened.
