I was an O scaler for many years and can say that the shows, magazines,
conventions, etc. are well supported. Manufactured products are far more
numerous than S, and new items are coming forth every day. It really doesn't
make sense to judge O scale's vitallity by local events, and clubs in general
are becoming more and more a thing of the past in every hobby. People are
generally not interested in giving up personal time to an organization. Also,
when I say it is gaining ground, I don't necessarily mean as a percentage of
the model railroad hobby. I mean the raw numbers are improving. By the way,
the current and last president of the NMRA are both O scalers.

This is merely anecdotal, but the local 2-rail O scale group numbers
dwindled to the point where they withdrew their layout and participation
from the model railroad group at Union Station Kansas City.

The reason O scale 2-rail looks like (and is) gaining ground is because
the 2-rail guys broke away from the 3-rail folks to promote their
particular brand of O. They have their own shows, convention,
magazines, etc. They don't feel compelled to keep "united" at all
costs. There were some very lean years in the beginning, but
perseverence has paid off. It's working for them, and it could work
for S.
