Maybe not... but others who have taken up that torch are still around to 
enforce it.  Don't we count?

  Over the years it has become normal
  usage to say  "scale"  for 2 rail O and for smaller flanged S scale
  models and to say "gauge" for 3 rail O and for hirail S trains. People
  are comfortable with this usage so it works. AC Gilbert and JCLionel
  are not around to enforce their usage anymore!....dave
