Peter:
I had a permanent layout started several years ago. When I had to
move, I took down the benchwork, and now I'm reassembling it for my
new layout.
I also saved as much track and switches as I could, as well, and am
re-using them at every opportunity. Those odd lengths of track and
what have you, they become the far ends of storage tracks, held
together with the brass rail joiners I've had since 1961, since no
motive power runs there, anyway.
