Once I had the base and legs done, the helix took me 36 hours to build (36 days, one hour per day). It got tedious doing one level at a time, so I wanted to make progress on it, yet not get burned out on the project. Also, I was using wood glue to create the splice plates so the glue needed time to dry. I set a goal of working on the helix for one hour each day 7 days a week. It really worked. (for those of you reading this, Grant is referring to my old N-scale layout which contained a 10-level helix, as can be seen on this page: http://www.fourthray.com/Peter/Layouts/PCRR3/HE.htm) >My other question is 'what dd you do with it'? Doesn't seem easy to >convert to s scale. This was an N-scale layout I had from December 2000 to January 2003. I am 6'4" and was starting to have problems with my lower back. Double-level layouts just didn't agree with me (they still don't). I finally had to make the decision to tear the layout out down and build something that wouldn't hurt my back. The entire layout went to the landfill, except for the helix. I just couldn't bring myself to get rid of it. I really enjoyed building it, and, since my other hobby is woodworking, was quite proud of the work I had done. I tried to sell it, but others had the same problem I had - not enough space to justify it. I thought about integrating it into my next layout, which was going to be only a one-level layout, but somehow use it as storage track. Eventually, I had to come to the painful decision to also send it to the landfill. >Seems like you made to great choices - wives and scales! Thank you.
