I forgot to mention that one source of information that COULD be great, and was
intended to be a valuable resource, is the Model Train Wiki at
http://modeltrainwiki.com/
This was started early this year, but participation seems to have died off
around February or early March. Too bad, as it had a lot of potential as a
resource combining info from many sources (US!)
A FAQ for the list would be another resource, but someone or some group have to
be responsible for compiling and updating it. The S Scale and especially the S
Gauge sections of Wikopedia are really terrible with little info and much of
what is there flat out wrong. (American Flyer originally produced by CD
Models?).

are really looking for information about S scale, most on-line groups are not
the best starting point. Referring them to the NASG web site, Craig
O'Connell's web site, Paul York's or any of several others (not intending to
slight any of the many sites, most of which are or should be linked from the
above) is a far better bet for solid information than just lurking on the
groups.
