After coming back from the convention in years past I've always had a
burst of things I couldn't wait to do. This year was no exception.
Project #1 was to build Jim Kings' new flat car. Overall it's a great
kit --not overwelming to build but a slight challenge. I'm waiting for
the Floquil smell to leave so I can letter it.

Project #2 was to get a Overland S-2 switcher back to running right. It
was sluggish and would stall without warning. It needed a major lub job
and cleanup under the bonnet! I reprogramed it and it's now back to
good health. I couldn't believe all the crude that had accumulated on
the wheel wipers. Sort of like seeing all the carpet fibers in some old
Lionel engine.

Next I dug out a neat little gas station kit that Banta has been
selling--I don't hear much of Bill's new stuff lately so it was a
surprise when I saw a great model of it in the contest room. Jeff
Wilson had them in stock so I brought one home. I've done some painting
on the parts over the last two evenings.

Between painting chores, I dug out a project that I had put aside that
needed some parts. This is to install the Tusamani sound unit and new
LED lights on my workhorse 0-8-0 switcher. I had purchased some typical
LED's back in June from Jim Hinds at Richmond Controls. I found a
problem in that the shape of a steam engine headlight is the exact
opposite the LED's shape. The LED's are larger where they should get
smaller--hence they don't fit the lightlight casting's well.

After talking with Jim, he suggest using 'surface mounted' LED's. These
arrived last week. These little guys are very small--guessing 1/32" per
side. What I've done so far is to drill a little hole in the back of
the MV lens and glue the LED into it. I will be doing the hookup
tonight. One simply has to use a magna-site to see anything when
working with these little guys.

I've got to start readying the layout for the San Jacinto Club's
November tour. Actually the tour starts in late Oct and runs into
December because there are so many layouts open. That will involve
working on two switch machines, reprograming my turntable and lot's of
track cleaning. Other domestic chores are to shampoo the carpet and
general dusting of the equipment. Guess I need a French maid! I need a
new small control panel but that might have to wait, maybe some little
elf will build me one for Christmas.
