Hi Dave; Some years ago Mike Palmiter(Sp?) modeled New York City railroading in S scale. His layout was covered in several issues of the Dispatch and was also featured in an early issue of Kalmbach's Great Model Railroads annual.
He used HO module sections and parts of HO kits (particularly City Classics) for many of his buildings. Sky Scrapers were built using a core of Plexiglas or other clear plastic with overlays of colored tape and card stock for the structural elements between the windows. Today you could also use the Pine Canyon and Grand River kits to kitbash larger structures, as well as Clever Brothers and other paper products. It is worth remembering that many buildings trackside are not all that much bigger in the city, it's the downtown buildings (often somewhat removed from the railroad) that are really big! Pieter E. To: [email protected] Date: Friday, January 9, 2009, 5:59 PM Hi All, Anyone know of any S scale layouts that feature large city architecture? I was wondering how the supply of building components is in S scale? Doors, windows, etc. suitable for city scenes. I'm thinking about building a harbor based railroad like the HYCH car float operation but don't know if there's enough S sized components and details to make the scenery?
