Something nobody has mentioned that is not directly related to scale is that I
think there is less interest among today's modelers in having fanciful cars on
the layout. More people freelanced in the '50s-60s because information about
the prototype was less readily available and models to match it would have been
difficult to find if it did exist.

I had a few fanciful cars in HO; Carsten's Coast to Coast RR show cars from
RMC, an NEB&W boxcar, etc. I don't think I have any in S, although there are a
set of "Central New Jersey S Gaugers" reefer sides floating around the unbuilt
kits collection.

Someone mentioned the Reid Brother's N scale "Cumberland Valley" as a well know
model railroad. It should be, having been featured in the press quite a few
times and even on the cover of a few books, and had a Keller tape of the line.
As I recall, the builders had exactly ONE car lettered with the "Cumberland
Valley" name, as their layout modeled the real railroads around Hagerstown, MD
(N&W, PRR and Reading). As more people model prototype railroads there is less
opportunity and interest in private road models.
