Don, I probably misunderstood the comments. I would never have gotten into S scale modeling had it not been for my good friend who models in HO. He is a master modeler from whom I have learned many valuable techniques in crafting a model or doing a kitbash. I find, however, that many HO guys suffer from the exclusivity syndrome: "Why are you modeling in S when everybody is in HO?" That question has been put to me. Another comment from a diehard HO modeler, "I know only a few S guys, and they're all weird." Newsflash: To people on the outside of scale modeling, all model railroaders are weird. Some of you may have read the lengthy analysis of model railroaders in general. It came through the steam freight cars list about three years ago or so. After about 50 pages of analysis and naming names, the author decided that we all need psychotherapy. Point he missed: Modeling is psychotherapy.

I know I have much more in common with S model builders than S collectors. Before I had the business I would tell people that I had more in common with CNJ N scalers than a pure AF collector. And, I am sure for just about any prototype S scale modeler that they have more in common with those who try to model the same roadname than those who just collect or even operate S gauge trains. I am sure that Ed L would have more to talk about with someone modeling the NYC in Z than left and right hand door knob variations of AF 930 cabooses (yes, that is a very interesting topic to AF collectors).
