I bought a lot of four AF semi-junkers a week or so ago, principally for the
twin hopper,
and I got around to it this afternoon, doing my usual half-way to decency
conversion
(additional handrails, enlarged brake step, trimming off flash--and of course
Ace bolsters
and trucks); if I started replacing the brake lever and all the grabirons it
would be more
work and tedium than it was worth--although I just might replace the brake
lever on a few
if I come across a few castings for the wheel and gearbox merely for the
variety.
Probably only a few more AF hoppers, as I have about two-dozen much better SHS
and AM
ones.
In any event, I noticed the lettering on this one (plain grey AF, not any
lettering for prototypes)
was not heat die-stamped, so I tried rubbing it off with a toothbrush and
abrasive cleanser and
it came off cleanly. Then I tried it with a caboose I was thinking of
converting to a LV steel one
for my SHS LV SW-9; worked fine again.
I have three AF cabooses, none in great shape, each a bit different from the
others, all seem to
have experienced some roof damage, especially on the corners. I shall remove
cast-on railings
and handrails, the roofwalk, fabricate a sheet and strip styrene floor, finish
the endsills and then
start adding new detail (end railings, raised roofwalk, wire handrails,
smokejack); I can start to
see the end product in my mind...
