Hi Tom; This depends on the exact model and how it is equiped.
I've seen many pictures on the old New Haven of EMD GP-9, Alco RS11, FA/FB, and even FM H16-44 units MUed on long freights in the late 1950s. Earlier units were often incompatible. Pieter E.
