I've only had one split gear thus far, on SHABBONA's ALCO Models RS-2. I temporarily solved the problem by ACC'ing the gear on the shaft, and drilling and tapping a hole for a set screw. Then I removed one gear tooth on each side of the split. This allowed the meshing gear to ride over the defective spot without jumping.
I guess the question that comes to my mind is, do gears in gearboxes really need to be press fit on the shafts? Axle gears are one thing, but couldn't other gears be designed to rotate on the shaft instead?
