But again, there is no substitute for, nor any excuse for not providing, good
illustrated step-by-step instructions. If more
vendors understood the need, then we'd be halfway there. To get all the way
there, we need modelers who are willing to
jump in!

Dick,

You hit the nail on the head! There are so many imported items, be it
model railroad, model airplane, or whatever
that include very little in the way of instructions for construction or use.
China is the most flagrant! Somewhere in the
translation, much is lost, if they even include instructions at all! Quality
importers will write/rewrite instructions in plain
old everyday English.
Quality Control of Chinese products is also a joke! I wonder if they ever
heard the term? I've purchased several HO
locomotives (bite my S tongue) this past year, just because they were NYC and
had DCC with sound. Three out of
four had problems right out of the box (not shipping damage, but electronic
issues) that could have been prevented with
good quality control. Rather than bother to send the locos back to the
importer, I was able to fix them myself with
replacement parts, but this should not have been necessary. I guess it dips
into their profit margin to have good QC.
Importers don't bother to QC the product before shipping to the customer like
our S brass importers do/did. Same
problems exist with radio controlled model airplane products from China.
I realize there are some imported products that are good quality, or the
importer goes at great lengths to improve the
product quality. But, for the most part, too much trash is coming into this
country these days! Perhaps we create our
own problem.....we want excellent products, but not willing to pay the price!
We need to get back to Buying American!
