Dear Bob and Jace,
Walter Graeff, founder of Ace Model Railroad Co. told me that he
made a contact at Lionel and asked for Boxcar and 3 bay hopper
shells. The agreement was that he would have to purchase a days run
of shells for it to be worthwhile to prepare the tooling to be run.
He told me that a days run was 5,000 shells. He also told me that
once upper management found out about the shipment of the complete
shells, the person who made the decision was let go. The person that
ended up with most of these bodies was Josh Seltzer. He purchased
them as kits using the Ace hardware, painted and lettered the
completed RTR cars and marketed them.
