Well, before I became an S scaler I was aware of Frank Titman's, Roger 
Nulton's( the one that really got me interested in S scale)and Ed L's( probably 
the best know nowdays?) 
Those are about as well know as many HO layouts I've seen in magazines, 
although not as well known as the G&D or the AM .
Animation can be toy like or scale like but sadly most is toy like so of little 
interest to scale modelers.I've seen some neat european scale layouts with 
operational autos and trucks rolling down the highway along side the right of 
way, now that animation I can live with but not those flyer or lionel barrel or 
cow cars......dave
