Hi all ---
First, one has to build before one can run. (Also wire, which is my LEAST
favorite part of the hobby.) The hobby is also called MODEL railroading, and
if you are like me, the modeling part is a lot of fun. I spend a lot more
time making things than running trains. That being said, there are times
when the trains run for hours. Once the railroad is farther along, I hope to
be able to have basic operation sessions with one or two guests.
Re: scenery – I have never had a personal layout get to a full scenery phase.
Like Dave B., many times as soon as a layout was running I found that I had
learned enough that I needed to make a better layout, so torn it down and built
another better layout. The last layout lasted 17 years and never got that
full scenery level because every time I would get to work on it, there would be
the threat of an imminent move, which finally did happen (after 29 years!) in
2004. However, I did have a good time using card board strips in a lattice
(hot glued together) covered with cut open paper bags. I can recommend this
as a way to see how the landforms do or don’t work for you. If you don’t
like, knife and scissors make short work of the old and hot glue, cardboard
strips and paper bags (craft paper) make fast work of the new. Once you like
the look, you can then cover it with whatever finish you like (plaster, etc.)
to make it permanent, then garnish with your favorite foliage materials.
As a hobby shop owner, I did have the rare occasion to custom build a few
layouts to full scenery stage. However, these were small so they could be
carried intact through a standard door by just two to four guys. Considering
that the scenery is what really makes the railroad look like what it is
supposed to be, it is unfortunate that more of us don’t get that far...
Have fun!

-----------I've never gotten a layout beyond the plywood pacific phase. Once
the track is operational I tend to run the trains till I get tired of the
layout then tear it down and build another...dave
