I have enjoyed reading about everyone's philosophy on home layouts. It all goes
to say that we are involved in a hobby which provides each one of us a great
deal of enjoyment. There are no wrong answers!
Here are mine (answers that is):
My first attempt at a scale layout taught me much but left me frustrated. As a
2 level mushroom design, it was too complex for my enjoyment. I was in a hurry
to get up and running and did trackwork almost exclusively. This meant that
things like scenery and structures were not well thought out and, consequently,
not easy to incorporate into the existing track plan. And then track seemed to
always be in a certain amount of repair.
So the layout I am presently working on is a single level around the rooms
design. It is not modular (as in S Mod), but designed for removal in sections
if necessary. I decided that each operational section of the layout would be
completed in turn (track, scenery, structures) before moving on to the next.
Prototypical operational ability is a primary goal (no around and around the
room running possible). So far this has been a very enjoyable experience for
me.
