Each ballast bonding method has pros and cons. White glue can leave shinny
spots. It remains water soluble, which can be a pro or a con, depending. Matte
medium is dull, but some less expensive brands can leave a white residue. It is
not water soluble once set, which may be good but makes it harder to salvage
ready-made track if you change the track plan/dismantle a layout.

I have heard about using acrylic flat base from the paint store as a matte
medium substitute, and now Future. I have not tried either. If they are
effective and cost competitive, there is no reason not to try them.
